In the center of Saint Gilgen (Sankt Gilgen) is the Mozart statue. Here we see the musician as a youth -- before he went to Vienna and on to fame. Mozart is remembered fondly in Saint Gilgen because this is where his mother, Anna Maria Walburga Pertl, and his sister, Maria Anna Walburga ("Nannerl") lived. The monument is dedicated to their memory, not his.

Mozart's mother was born in Saint Gilgen and baptized on Christmas Day in 1720. She lived in the building which now houses the district court. When her father died in 1724, the remaining family moved to Salzburg where she married violin instructor Leopold Mozart in 1747. To them was born the musical genius Johann Chrysostom Wolfgang Gottlieb Mozart, later to be known as Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart -- or as we know him today -- simply "Mozart."
