This is one of three fortresses erected to protect Vienna's political elite from the masses in the event of a public uprising. The barracks are similar to some of the castles and palaces of northern Italy with contrasting red brick and pale stone trim.

A pair of military men were chosen to design the building, instead of civilian architects. Perhaps if they'd gone with the civilians, there might have been more attention paid to function than to form. The building rises around three courtyards, none of which, it is said, is large enough to hold proper military exercises. But the apparently the military men did know quite a lot about defense, as the building is festooned with ramparts, battlements, and other lines of defense.

That's not to say there aren't examples of poor planning in the building. Specifically, there were no toilets in the original plan and they had to be added later.

  I find this building to be very interesting. I also find the name of one of the arcitects to have my name. My grandparents were from Vienna, although, he was not born until 1881.
